Your First Visit
Begin where you are.
You do not need to be flexible, understand Katonah Yoga®, or arrive with an established practice.
Whether you have practiced for years or are stepping into a yoga studio for the first time, you are welcome to begin with the body and the life you have today.
-
Abode classes are thoughtful, structured, and conversational. You can expect movement, breathwork, time to reflect, and practical guidance that helps you understand how the practice is working for you.
Rather than asking everyone to make the same shape in the same way, we use form as a tool for exploration. You may be invited to work with props, adjust your orientation, consider a metaphor, or notice a pattern that appears both on and off the mat.
You will be encouraged to participate with curiosity, not to perform or perfect the practice.
-
Abode is for the experienced practitioner, the curious beginner, and the person who simply wants to feel more at home in their body.
You do not need previous experience with Katonah Yoga®. Our teachers will offer context, options, and support throughout the practice.
Come as you are. Practice begins with what is available today.
-
Teaching at Abode is clear, engaged, and rooted in curiosity.
Classes may incorporate classical yoga postures, breathwork, prop work, adjustments, metaphor, seasonal theory, and conversation. Teachers may move around the room, ask questions, and offer individualized observations rather than remaining at the front of the class.
Hands-on support may be offered with your consent. You are always welcome to decline an adjustment, modify a posture, rest, or ask for clarification.
The purpose is not to tell you there is only one correct way to practice. It is to help you recognize your patterns and discover more options.
Choosing your first class
You do not need to find the “perfect” class before beginning. Start with the class that fits your schedule, current energy, and level of curiosity.
Each class description will explain its pace, focus, and whether previous experience is recommended. If you are uncertain, contact us and we will help you choose a useful place to begin.

Before You Arrive
-
Register before arriving so your space is confirmed and the teacher knows to expect you.
-
Plan to arrive 10–15 minutes before class. This gives you time to settle in, meet your teacher, and ask any questions without feeling rushed.
-
Wear clothing that allows you to move comfortably. There is no specific dress code and no need to purchase anything new for your first class.
-
There is a limited number of mats available for use, and we encourage you to bring your own. All additional props used during class will be available in the studio.

A Few Practical Questions
-
You are welcome here. Let your teacher know it is your first class so they can offer additional context and help you get oriented.
-
No. The method and language will be introduced as part of the practice. You are not expected to arrive already knowing it.
-
There is nothing you are required to accomplish. Props, variations, observation, and rest are all part of practice.
-
No. Hands-on support is offered only with consent, and you can change your preference at any time.
-
For the sake of being respectful of everyone’s time, we begin class on time and will lock the door at the start of class.
Typically with the teacher talking, you might get bought an additional 3 minutes to get into the studio, but we don't recommend coming in after the class time, as it’s distracting and disturbs the room.
-
For cancellations, we recommend doing so up to 12 hours before the start of class to not incur a charge or losing the class credit used to book.
For Auto-Renew packages, there is a late cancel and no-show fee. The Late Cancel fee is $6.00 and is applied when canceling 6 hours or less before class. The No-Show fee is $10.00. This applies if you do not show up for class. Since auto-renew packages get priority in booking we want to make sure everyone can get into a class given our small class sizes.
If you do not hold an Auto Renew membership, the Late Cancel fee will not be charged, and you lose your class credit. You will be charged the No-Show fee of $10.00, as it takes away from someone else being able to attend class.
Practice being at home in your life.
Your first visit does not require a particular level of experience—only a willingness to begin.
